King of the Jungle by Loopydave King of the Jungle by Loopydave
I first read the original Tarzan book when I was a kid of 12... still love the character today and always wanted to paint him... so I did. Poor impulse control I guess.

Not as strange as the fact that he wore a teletubby outfit to the office party last year and can play the ukulele with his feet.

That's a beautiful piece! His face is a little too severe, but living in the jungle and being exposed to the elements 24/7 isn't the ideal plan for proper skincare I suppose. :D Still, it's fantastically done. :)

He only looks like that as the panther just told a ridiculous joke and he is trying not too laugh ;)

This is great, I have been reading all of the original Tarzan novel recently and this really fits. The character is way different than he is shown in the movies :)

Thanks Ben. There was talk of a new Tarzan movie with Alexander Skarsgard in the lead, which could have been interesting, but last I heard production had shut down.

:) Grew up reading allll of his books! I've never really watched any of the movies or t.v. shows, because in the end, nothing can touch the books. What a delightful picture - down to his "companion" who I recall from Beasts of Tarzan I believe? As a kid, that was just the height of cool - to have a panther following you.

Can't confirm which book Tarzan hangs out with a panther, but I know he did at some point and yes, it would be the height of cool, kid or grown up!
Cheers!

Masterful work! I particularly like your idealised representation of the male form. It's definitely how I always dreamed the lord of the jungle would look.

The orginal tarzan of the apes was one of the first books i ever read....THIS IS PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!
No nancy-boy wimp this one!!!!
In the book, the REAL Tarzan(yours) carries a full grown male lion carcase out of the jungle over his shoulders and dumps it on the ground in front of civilized men for a bet.

This one could do it
.....Excellent face too!

This is the best visualization of Tarzan ever, in any medium. Hope to see him in action. Taking an equally beautiful Leopard Woman? The old Jungle Comics seldom went a Kaanga episode without him taking a beating. It was always arousing to see him splayed, helpless on the jungle floor, often while Ann watched. John Derek certainly played on that in his Tarzan movie. Tarzan lying unconcious as Jane caresses his loins? Tarzan overwhelmed, moaning, near defeat in the bear-grip of White Bull? Maybe someday?

:D Glad you like, though I think you may have given the scenario thing a whole bunch of extra thought in there!

Oh, I did. Have ever since the mid fifties as a matter of fact. Back then I had no idea what was so compelling about the old jungle comics. I kept expecting long-past-comics-code movies to address for grownups what we all eventually read into those scenarios with near naked gorgeous bronze bodies. Sheena was a complete bust. What they might have done with Tanya Roberts' looks and smouldering sexuality? Instead she got cast against some twerp who shouldn't have been allowed to take his shirt of on the same continent. John Derek had obviously been reading the same jungle comics I had. Kaanga got knocked out and captured at least once per episode. If Derek hadn't been so concerned about keeping his PG rating he might have finally hit the mark. As it was the scene where Bo/Jane sponges the unconcious Tarzan's (closeup shot) groin was pretty steamy, as was his agony and near defeat in the beargrip of White Bull. Doesn't sound as if you're interested in going there. Too bad for me. I don't have the talent to take Tarzan or Sheena where I've always imagined them going in (or out) of their skant leopardskins. Still, yours is the best Tarzan ever. I guess "best" is defined as "closest to how I've imagined him since about 1955!"
