Illustration for a new product range for Global Gear, who were nice enough to let me post it on dA.
Not as light hearted as some of my other stuff, but in my defense, this particular sabertooth is having a bad day (probably just found out that he is, in fact, extinct) - and is usually quite cheery and is kind to his mother.

Pencil sketch on paper, painted in photoshop.

With those great big teeth, he's probably just had a bad visit to the dentist, which is why he is in such
a foul mood. But the "and is kind to his mother" comment made me think of this guy, with the completely
opposite expression - soft and shy - going home after a hard day's butchering to his mother, only to get
chewed out because there are blood stains all over his armor, again!

And you have to get the blood out, otherwise you're going to have a whole
new problem of rust on your armor! :D

Wicked mix of human and cat eyes.
...considering cats get their teeth in before they are weened, he should have been really nice to his mom.

I can't believe I missed this one, Dave. This is a fantastic illustration!!! The fur looks really soft and I think all he needs is a bro-hug and some milk =)

You are absolutely awesome(one of the reason I decided to join after seeing your artwork amongst others) Can you recommend any books/videos/tutorials that can help me draw cartoons, especially digitally? I'm trying to teach myself Adobe illustrator/photoshop but I'm getting frustrated since I'm new to them. thanks for any help in advance!

I'm pretty much self taught, traditionally and digitally. I know a magazine like Imagine FX is a magazine full of tips and helpful hints with painting and painting digitally which you may find helpful. Here are a few step by steps with how I mostly operate - scan in my pencil sketch, block my colours in with a low opacity hard edge brush, building up my colours and then using a soft edge brush (also at low opacity) to build up my soft tones.
