Painting Sid by Loopydave Painting Sid by Loopydave
Sid James, part of a DVD series on comedians I've been doing for Australian release. Kind of embarrassed to admit I had never heard of him before the job, but then I've never watched a single 'Carry On' movie, wasn't raised in England, and well, he passed away in 1976.

Pencil sketch, painted in photoshop.

Sid!!! Awesome work! He had the dirtiest laugh ever!
My fave Carry On film is Carry On Abroad:

"There's a man in my bathroom!"
"With no bottom!"
"And nothing on the other side!"

Hahahaaaaa.... man you sure can stir up the past with these brilliant works. I notice you have one of the two Ronnies in your collection of funny caricatures, by any chance have you the other ?( Ron Corbett )

Cheers, continuously amazed, Bare.

Thanks! I never did illustrate Ron Corbett... the other Ronnie was a DVD cover for a documentary on Ronnie Barker. Fun job though, and Ronnie Corbett would have been great to paint!

Maybe rounder, less angular features (eyebrows/mouth/eyes,nose)? Only by a small amount though, as it's pretty near perfect as it is!

This is a really gorgeous caricature of Sid! I grew up watching the Carry On movies in video (only had two
of them, so it was a real thrill when they were released on DVD) He has one of those iconic faces; easily
recognisable to those who know him :D

Cheers! Never saw any of his movies myself.. did watch a documentary about him though, to get an idea of his 'signature' expressions etc.

I haven't seen any documentaries about him, but if they showed snippets
from the Carry On films, then you would have gotten a really good idea
of his expression. You captured him here flawlessly! In some respects,
Sid is a lot like Rowan Atkinson- they both have rubber faces and a lot
of their humor is from the expressions, and not just the crazy stunts
they're doing in the movies.

Thanks man! Kind of embarrassed to admit I still haven't watched any of his movies... the client gave me a documentary though, and watched that to get a 'handle' on how he looks and his signature expressions.

Thats sid james right there! For someone who'd never seen a carry on film you got his character to a T. Great work. Were you give the referance to work from or did you have to go research yourself?

Cheers! Client sent me a documentary on Sid and watched that to get a feel for the expressions that 'define' him and then did a search online.

Hi, very good painting :).

Would you mind sharing some tips with your process? Like how many layers do you use to draw something like that?

Thank you very much :).

Number of layers really varies a lot with me - this one I used very few - bow tie was a separate layer and I used a couple of them for some of the hair, but mostly just painted it on the one layer. Other times I use a lot of layers - often one for different objects... allows me to quickly modify any particular element a client might wish to make ("make that smaller", "change that bits colour" etc.). Normally like to keep my background and foreground on separate layers, but mostly its just how I feel like working at the time. :D
Cheers!
