Venus Dahling by Loopydave Venus Dahling by Loopydave

Been watching a bunch of crazy old scifi movies for the fun of it… and here’s my little tribute to ‘Queen of Outer Space’ - featuring Zsa Zsa Gabor’s hair and hungarian accent, some very ‘special’ effects and props from the movie the Forbidden Planet. Oh, and the most disappointing looking Death Ray in the history of cinema. Am I suggesting you should watch this? No, no I am not…. I watched it so you don’t have to. You can thank me later.

Pencil sketch, paint in photoshop.

She did appear in a supporting part in the film biography about artist Toulouse-Lautrec, "Moulin Rouge", directed by John Huston, and starring Jose Ferrer.  Also she and her then husband, George Sanders, appeared together in a 1956 film called "Death of a Scoundrel" based on the unsolved murder of creepy, greedy financier Serge Rubenstein in 1955.  And she has a brief cameo in Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil" (1958) as the proprietor of a "restaurant" with a bunch of "singers" working for her.  But Zsa Zsa was more of a publicity figure than anything else - she really had no great acting talent.  Her sister Eva Gabor (the film "Gigi" and as co-star of the television comedy "Green Acres") did have acting talent.  "Queen of Outer Space" at least gave Zsa Zsa her only film lead role of note.

Ah, such a fun movie.  Horrible special effects.  Great artwork, as usual.  If you want a good B sci fi movie, check out Devil Girl from Mars.  Its actually not to bad until they try and do some special effects far outside their budget.

Just checked out the poster art for Queen of Outer Space and you totally nailed the look and feel of the originals right down to the colours. I always loved those 50's science fiction movies, even the bad ones.

Ever see Invasion of the Saucer Men from 1957, or Teenagers from Outer Space from 1959? I especially love the aliens in the former and the leading lady (Lovely Dawn Bender as Betty) in the latter.

Thanks! I was trying to get the feel of the original poster without actually copying it, so glad you noticed. Huge fan of those old movie posters!
Haven't seen those two movies yet, but they are on a list I have of old movies to watch - so I will look out for both the aliens and Betty!
Cheers!

Just for that, I'll just have to go watch Forbidden Planet; however, I'm not sure I'm feeling unwell enough to watch Ice Pirates.

Yeah, you kind of need to be in just the right frame of mind to watch Ice Pirates :D and Forbidden Planet is definitely the better of the two movies!

Forbidden Planet most certainly is better; both cast and story line. Ice Pirates is rather like the script was written by a bunch of folks at an out of control RPG session. The good cast spent the movie trying very hard to make it all work, digressions and all.

=P Cool!!!  I first saw the movie when I was a kid and the theme song haunted me....forty years later, I got it on DVD and it was still a fun movie to watch! Slow, but not cheesy.

Hahaha, thanks for taking one for the team Dave.

Used to watch Green Acres, starring Eva Gabor.... I'm sure she dropped a few "dahlinks" in there as well. Haha
Great work Dave and all the best, Barry:pencil:
