awesome rendition Dave - i did a small one in the same light "a tribute 2 Gil" in Fifties Future,... very small - u probably may have not noticed it ((the girl on the right next to the Robo kid on the rocket-ship kiddie ride)) ... [link] ... oh yeah, and then one to George Petty on the left side too
I picked the George petty influence on the girl on the left when I first looked at the piece. Missed the gil elvgren one though- and I call myself a Gil fan! Absolutely LOVE his stuff (if you havent noticed). Petty, Vargas, Fritz willis were great, but Elvgren was the king in my books!
I have the giant taschen book of his stuff - the Brown and Bigelow callender stuff, the coke ads, pretty much everything that hit print - 588 pieces in all. Your right about his work - it just screams '50's but the very best of the '50's!
we seem to love the same stuff - alot - here's the Big question 4 ya (drum-roll please ) Norman Rockwell ? my all-time favorite ... and even though he didn't paint cheesecake - he could do it all. What's your take on NR ?
We both obviously have good taste! Love his stuff - my favourite artist growing up. When I was a kid (here in Australia) I used to visit an american painter who lived down the road, and he mostly just did copies of Rockwells stuff. Did my first NR copy when I was about 13, though I used acrylics at the time. Got about 3 or 4 books of Rockwells paintings (yeah, I have a fairly comprehensive art book library- been collecting books for years). Big influence on me - maybe not in technique or anything, but I love that his pictures always told a story.
